Holker Hall & Gardens

Last Updated:

Welcome to Holker, a name given by the Norse invaders meaning ‘A rise in marshy ground’. For centuries, people have felt drawn here; the love of those who have lived here emanates from the architecture, the grounds and the landscape they created around it. Nestled between the hills of the Lake District and the sea marshes it rises from, Holker is, above all, a family home.

There is no need (or facility) to prebook your tickets – just come along and pay at the kiosk when you arrive.

We accept both cash and cashless payments across the site.

Dogs are very welcome everywhere at Holker, except inside the Hall. We kindly ask that they are kept on leads at all times, please also ‘pick up’ after them and make use of the bins provided throughout the Estate.

Wayfinding
Our knowledgeable Hosts and Guides are always at hand to advise. Guidebooks will provide a wider and more in-depth history of Holker. For adventurers who wish to discover the Holker Estate for themselves please pick up a copy of our grounds map from the information kiosk by the Courtyard Cafe.

Etiquette
Please do not pick our flowers. Feel free to picnic on the lawns. Our Café sells delicious snacks, but you are welcome to bring your own food and drink. Feel free to bring your yoga mat but please don’t play music or ball games. Smoking is not permitted in any food areas or inside the property buildings. Please do not ride your bicycles in the Park, Gardens or the Café Courtyard.

Resident Animals
As you enter Holker, Fallow Deer can be seen grazing across the grounds towards Morecambe Bay. By the Fountain you are likely to encounter our beautiful East Indian Cayuga ducks. You may also meet various friendly dogs belonging to any one of the home team here.

Accessibility
Externally, the Grounds are accessible to all. A series of ramps run the entire length of the Elliptical Garden and the Estate is landscaped with smooth pathways. Our property map will guide you to these. Wheelchair access to the Hall is limited to the ground floor only.

We offer a free wheelchair borrowing service on a first come first served basis.

The team here look forward to welcoming you.
