Welcome to the Masons Arms!

In 1835 a Stone Mason Called George Tilney applied for a Licence to sell alcohol at what was then called 'The Quiet Woman'.

It Is said the original sign depicted a woman carrying her decapitated head. After initially being turned down he eventually won his licence and renamed this public house 'The Masons Arms' In a celebration of his own trade.

The front of the pub was built In 1935 in Tudor style as a flagship project by the local Tadcaster Tower Brewery. The rear was the original public house along with stables dating back to 1835, now the 'Mason’s Arms' accommodation.

It Is a Grade II Listed Building for its special architectural and historic interest, Including the fireplace nd panelling in the bar area, salvaged from the Castle Prison Gatehouse.

With its enviable position overlooking the City Walls and Gatehouse, and a secluded beer terrace offering views of the River Foss, The Masons Arms is a popular venue for locals and tourists alike."

The Masons Arms Is now one of the few independent privately operated traditional British pubs left.
