Dog-Friendly Ripon

Last Updated:

18 Jun 2026

Ripon is a compact cathedral city with riverside paths, canal walking and open countryside beginning close to the centre. The Fountains Way provides a substantial circular route from the city towards Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, where dogs are welcome throughout the outdoor estate on short leads. This makes Ripon a strong base for combining a manageable town centre with a genuinely full-scale dog walk rather than relying on a quick circuit of the nearest park.

Ripon Scenic Cruises

Short on time? Start with these three Ripon favourites: a traditional town pub, a quirky Market Square café and a scenic canal cruise.

The Golden Lion is a traditional pub where dogs are welcome inside, making it a strong pick for refuelling after town wandering. It serves cask ales, great food and has a beer garden. The warm atmosphere handles muddy paws without fuss.

Oliver's Pantry is a quirky café just off the Market Square where dogs are welcome inside. It serves full-bodied coffee, loose-leaf tea and fresh wholesome food all day, plus there's a doggy menu. The relaxed atmosphere is perfect for a proper exhale.

Ripon Scenic Cruises offers narrowboat trips on the Ripon Canal aboard the Pride of Ripon, and well-behaved dogs are welcome aboard. It's a lovely slower-paced option with countryside views and wildlife spotting. Free parking is available at the basin when spaces allow.

Is Ripon a good place to visit with a dog?

Yes. Ripon is a very good dog-friendly cathedral city for a slower-paced day out because it combines riverside walks, market-town atmosphere, historic streets and easy access to countryside routes around North Yorkshire.

The city is compact and manageable on foot, which makes it easy to move naturally between cafés, pubs, shops and walking areas without constantly needing the car.

Ripon also works particularly well as a base for wider exploring, with places like Fountains Abbey, Studley Royal Water Garden and the Yorkshire Dales all within easy reach.

It is the kind of place where the day quietly becomes riverside walk, coffee, cathedral views, another walk, then somebody insisting they are “just quickly” going into a bakery before emerging twenty minutes later carrying enough provisions for a minor expedition.

Where can I walk my dog in and around Ripon?

The riverside walks around the River Skell and River Ure are some of the most popular dog walking areas in Ripon.

These flatter routes work well for gentler wandering directly from the city centre, while nearby green spaces give dogs room to stretch their legs without needing a long drive first.

For longer walks, Studley Royal Deer Park and the wider countryside around Fountains Abbey are extremely popular with dog owners. Dogs are welcome around much of the Studley Royal estate and surrounding parkland, although some restrictions apply inside the abbey buildings themselves. (nationaltrust.org.uk)

Ripon’s biggest strength is flexibility. You can combine historic city wandering with proper Yorkshire countryside walking in the same day without complicated travel between locations.

Is Ripon worth visiting with a dog on a rainy day?

Yes. Ripon adapts well to rainy-day visits because the city centre is compact and easy to explore in shorter bursts between indoor stops.

You can still enjoy riverside or market-square wandering between showers, then warm up in dog-friendly cafés or pubs nearby. The historic streets and cathedral surroundings also give the city a cosy atmosphere in poor weather rather than making the whole day feel weather-dependent.

Rain tends to slow Ripon down in quite a pleasant way. The city suits wandering and pottering far more than rushed sightseeing anyway.

For dog owners, the best rainy-day approach is shorter walks mixed with slower food stops and accepting that waterproof coats will eventually become decorative rather than functional.

Is Ripon easy to walk around with a dog?

Yes. Ripon is generally very easy to explore on foot with a dog.

The city centre is relatively compact, and many of the main cafés, pubs, shops and historic areas sit within comfortable walking distance of each other. That makes it ideal for slower wandering without repeatedly moving the car.

Most of the central streets are manageable for dogs, although market days can make the centre busier around the square.

Ripon works best at a relaxed pace. Wander the market square, follow the riverside paths, stop for lunch, repeat. The dog will naturally assume the cathedral bells are sounding specifically in their honour.

Where is the best place to park in Ripon with a dog?

For most visitors with dogs, the easiest parking options are the central long-stay car parks close to the cathedral and market square.

Cathedral Car Park and St Marygate Car Park are usually the best all-round choices because they sit within a few minutes’ walk of Ripon Cathedral, the market square, cafés and riverside routes. They are also convenient if you want to combine city wandering with a walk towards the River Skell.

If you only want a shorter visit around the shops and cafés, Marshall Way Car Park is useful for quick access to the centre, while Market Place Car Park works for very short stays directly in the middle of Ripon.

For visitors heading to Fountains Abbey or Studley Royal, parking directly at the National Trust site is usually much easier than parking in Ripon itself and then driving back out again.

Ripon is generally fairly relaxed for parking compared to larger Yorkshire destinations, although weekends and market days can become busier by late morning. Arriving earlier makes the whole day feel far calmer, especially when travelling with a dog who already believes the outing has begun the second the boot opens.
