Barnard Castle

Barnard Castle is a spectacular English Heritage medieval fortress perched above the River Tees in County Durham and dogs on leads are welcome to explore the grounds and garden areas alongside you. The ruins span centuries of drama and defence, with ramparts, towers and grassy baileys that give visiting hounds plenty of space for a gentle wander and a hundred new scents to investigate. The castle opens daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with last entry at 4:30 PM.

Advance online booking is available for discounted tickets, or you can buy admission on the day. Your dog will need to stay on the lead throughout and there's a thoughtful water bowl waiting outside the shop for post-ramble refreshment. The access page notes ramps in some areas, stairs in the Round Tower and ditches across the site, so plan your route with paws and footing in mind.

Assistance dogs are welcome throughout. It's a brilliant outing for history-loving dog owners who want ruins, riverside views and a proper stretch of the legs without leaving the dog behind.
