Berkhamsted Castle is a compact site of medieval earthworks and castle ruins on White Hill in Berkhamsted, open daily and looked after by English Heritage.

Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the castle site and earthworks, making it a practical heritage stop for dog owners exploring the area or breaking a journey. The ruins sit next to the station and the site includes steep slopes, stairs and uneven ground, so it's worth keeping an eye on your dog's footing as you explore. There are no on-site toilets or refreshments and no on-site parking, but charged public parking is available close by at the station or in the town centre.

It's an outdoor visit rather than a full day out, but the official dog welcome and easy station-side location make it a useful addition to a wider outing with your dog in tow.
