Berry Pomeroy Castle is a historic ruin managed by English Heritage, set in the countryside a few miles from Dartmouth. The atmospheric castle grounds include the remains of a Tudor mansion built into an earlier medieval fortress, with uneven paths, slopes and plenty of exploring to do. On-site facilities include a gift shop, café and picnic area, with free parking for visitors.

Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the castle ruins, in the gift shop and in the café, making it one of the more relaxed heritage sites for a day out with your dog. It's a proper explore rather than a quick stop, so there's time for sniff breaks among the stonework and a sit-down afterwards without leaving anyone in the car.

The site suits confident dogs who can manage uneven ground and don't mind other visitors. It's a useful destination when you want a bit of history and a change of scene from coastal walks and the café welcome means you can refuel together before heading back to Dartmouth or Totnes.
