The Blackfriars Tavern is one of those quietly brilliant pubs that feels like it’s been built for people who genuinely care about good beer, good conversation, and not much else getting in the way. Tucked between the river and the beach, it’s slightly off the main drag, which only adds to the “you found it” feeling when you walk in.

Inside, it leans traditional and unpretentious, with a serious focus on real ales and ciders, including a rotating selection that’s earned it some serious recognition, including regional awards for both pub and cider quality. There’s a mix of board games, reading material, and that low-key hum of people properly settling in rather than rushing through.

Food-wise, think proper pub comfort: homemade pies, generous portions, and the kind of chips that quietly steal the show. Outside, there’s a large, semi-enclosed beer garden with courtyard-style seating, ideal for warmer days or when the dog needs a bit more space to stretch out.

Dog Policy:

Dogs are welcome inside. They should be on the lead, well behaved, and reasonably quiet — but that good behaviour is rewarded with a free doggy treat, which most dogs seem to take very seriously.
