Bonawe Historic Iron Furnace

Bonawe Historic Iron Furnace near Taynuilt is one of Scotland's most complete charcoal-fuelled ironworks and dogs are welcome to explore the outdoor grounds with you on a lead. Managed by Historic Environment Scotland, this substantial industrial-heritage site still has its original furnace buildings, waterwheel and wooded hillside setting, making it a proper day-out attraction rather than a quick roadside stop.

The gravel car park is on site, with the nearest parking space just 8 metres from the visitor centre on flat ground. Your dog must stay on a lead throughout the visit and can't go into any roofed areas, so the indoor interpretation spaces are strictly humans-only.

Still, there's plenty to see outdoors: the furnace structures, remnants of the ironworking process and the atmospheric grounds themselves give you both a good wander and a slice of eighteenth-century industrial history. Open daily from 9.30am to 4pm, Bonawe is around nine miles from Oban and offers a different kind of outing for history-minded dog owners who don't mind their four-footer staying outdoors while you duck inside for the detail.
