Bothwell Castle

Bothwell Castle is one of Scotland's finest medieval ruins, perched above the River Clyde just outside Glasgow. Built in the 13th century and fought over for generations, the castle offers a proper heritage day out with crumbling towers, thick curtain walls and enough history to keep everyone interested while your dog enjoys the grounds. Dogs are welcome throughout the outdoor areas and castle grounds, making this an excellent destination for a dog-inclusive heritage visit.

Ordinary pet dogs aren't permitted inside roofed areas, but there's plenty to explore in the open air. The ruins themselves are substantial and the riverside setting adds a scenic backdrop to your wander. Bothwell Castle is managed by Historic Environment Scotland and opens Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30am to 4:30pm; closed Mondays and Sundays.

There's a small car park around 160 metres from the castle entrance, with designated spaces for larger vehicles. Drop-off at the entrance can be arranged if the walk from the car park isn't practical.
