Burgh Castle is one of those places that feels wide open the moment you arrive — big skies, sweeping views over the marshes, and the remains of a huge Roman fort quietly sitting on the edge of it all. It dates back to the 3rd century and was built as part of the Saxon Shore defences, with thick stone walls still standing tall today.

It’s less “formal attraction” and more “bring a coffee, wander, and take it in.” You can walk along the walls, explore the open space inside, and let the whole place unfold at your own pace.

It’s the kind of stop that works beautifully with a dog — plenty of space, fresh air, and that feeling of being slightly off the main track while still just outside Great Yarmouth.

Dog Policy:

Dogs are welcome, but should be kept on a lead. Please clean up after your dog too, as it’s open land with uneven ground and often livestock nearby.
