Camber Castle

Camber Castle is a dog-friendly historic ruin near Rye, built by Henry VIII and set on the edge of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. English Heritage welcomes dogs on leads to explore the exterior of the castle during any reasonable daylight hours, making it a proper heritage stop rather than just a walk. The site is accessed via a mile-long footpath across fields from Brede Lock, so plan for a bit of a yomp with the lead and bags in hand.

There's no on-site parking; the nearest car park is on Winchelsea Road in Rye, about a mile away. The castle itself is an atmospheric outdoor ruin with uneven ground, sheer drops and occasional falling masonry, so keep dogs close and watch your footing. Livestock may be present in surrounding fields, which is why leads are required throughout.

It's a short outing with clear heritage interest, useful as part of a longer coastal day out or a break from beach walks. No booking is needed and the castle is viewable year-round during daylight hours.
