Castell Bronllys

Castell Bronllys is a medieval stone tower and free-entry Cadw castle about nine miles northeast of Brecon, offering a compact but genuine slice of Welsh heritage you can explore with your dog. The site centres on a well-preserved round keep built by Bernard de Neufmarché in the late 11th century, set on a raised mound with the tower open for visitors willing to climb. Dogs on short leads are welcome on the ground floor levels of the castle, giving them a proper look inside the historic structure rather than just a sniff around the perimeter.

The upper floors and more sensitive areas remain off-limits, so this is a heritage stop rather than a full-day ramble, but it's a satisfying way to combine a dose of Norman history with your walk. The castle is open daily from 10am to 4pm between 1st April and 31st March.

There's no admission charge and the compact scale suits a quick detour or a windbreak pause when the weather turns. Lead loops stay short and manageable and there's no indoor café or facilities to navigate.
