Right on the edge of Chester's city centre, this English Heritage site is one of those places where history isn't tucked away — it's right under your feet. The Agricola Tower dates back to the 12th century and was once the main gateway into the castle, originally founded by William the Conqueror in 1070. It's not a huge, polished attraction — more of a tucked-away historic pocket — but that's part of the charm.
Climb up and you'll find the Chapel of St Mary de Castro, home to rare medieval wall paintings from around 1240, and step out onto the walls for sweeping views over Chester, the River Dee, and the surrounding city. Opening is typically seasonal and volunteer-led (often weekends April to October), which adds to that "catch it when you can" feel.
For dog owners, this is one of those rare historic sites where they can come along too. You dip in, explore a slice of history, take in the views, and carry on your wander with something a bit richer — and four paws happier — than when you arrived.
