Cockey Down

Cockey Down is a small chalk downland nature reserve managed by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, just outside Salisbury with views stretching across to the Cathedral spire. Dogs are welcome on lead across the reserve, making it a lovely spot for a quiet wander through seasonal wildflowers and classic chalk grassland. There's no car park on site, so you'll need to park off-site near the Church Road/Bishops Mead roundabout or approach via the A30 bridleway.

The reserve is open at all times, with spring and summer offering the best wildflower displays and birdsong. Cattle graze the downland, so keeping dogs on lead is essential year-round.

It's a proper taste of Wiltshire chalk country without the distance, ideal for an early-morning sniff session or a short escape when the main walks feel too far. Not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs, but if you and the dog are happy with uneven ground and a bit of a scramble, the Cathedral views are worth the effort.
