Just across from Sandford Park in Cheltenham, Cox's Meadow is one of those quietly brilliant green spaces that changes with the seasons — and sometimes even the week. A mix of meadow and wetland, it plays an important role in Cheltenham's flood alleviation, which means after heavy rain it can transform into a temporary wetland before gradually returning to open grassland. That shifting landscape has created a surprisingly rich habitat, supporting a variety of wildlife and plant life, and giving each visit a slightly different feel.
There's a well-used footpath and cycle route looping around the meadow, making it an easy, accessible walk for locals, families, and dog walkers. The name dates back to the early 1900s when the land was farmed by William Cox, long before the surrounding area developed. One of the real bonuses is the café right on the edge of the meadow, with big windows looking out over the space — making it very easy to turn a walk into a coffee stop without breaking stride.
It's open, relaxed, and very much a "take it at your own pace" kind of place. One day it's dry and open, the next it's a patchwork of water and reeds — either way, it keeps things interesting for curious noses and humans happy to follow the sniff route.
Good to know:
Water bowls available
Treats available
Doggy Menu available
Dog Policy:
Dogs are welcome throughout the meadow, though it's an open, unfenced space that can become wet or waterlogged after rain — so good recall is important and leads are handy if paws start plotting puddle detours.
