Dartmouth Castle

Dartmouth Castle is a historic clifftop fortress overlooking the mouth of the River Dart and dogs are welcome on leads throughout the castle site. This is a proper English Heritage day out with steep slopes, dramatic viewing points and heritage interest across the outdoor areas, so it suits active dogs who don't mind a climb.

The castle grounds include access to the shop and café and there's a water bowl and toileting provision on site. You'll need to keep your dog on a lead at all times and be ready for uneven surfaces and steps as you explore the fortifications and the riverside paths.

Limited pay-and-display parking is available close to the entrance, though English Heritage notes it isn't managed by them. Pair this with a wander around dog-friendly Dartmouth itself—it's the kind of heritage visit where the walk back to the harbour feels as good as the castle.
