Easby Abbey is a striking set of medieval ruins beside the River Swale, about a mile south-east of Richmond. Dogs on leads are welcome to explore the abbey grounds and wander through the atmospheric stone arches, so it's an easy add-on to a Richmond visit and a quiet alternative to the busier town centre. The site is managed by English Heritage and free to enter on a donation basis.

Opening hours are daily 10am to 6pm from late March to October and 10am to 4pm in winter. Expect uneven surfaces, steps and the possibility of muddy ground, so decent boots and a short lead make life easier.

There's a public car park signposted off the B6271 and a short walk along an unsurfaced private road brings you to the ruins. The combination of open sky, ancient stonework and riverside setting suits dogs who prefer a slower pace and owners who enjoy a bit of history without the queue.

Dog Policy:

Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the abbey grounds and ruins. Uneven surfaces, steps and muddy patches are common, so keep a short lead handy.
