Egglestone Abbey

Egglestone Abbey is a peaceful 12th-century ruin set beside the River Tees near Barnard Castle, managed by English Heritage. Dogs on leads are welcome to explore the atmospheric grounds with you, where crumbling arches and weathered stonework make a quietly dramatic backdrop for a wander and a sniff. There's a small picnic area on site, perfect for a break after nosing around the ruins together.

The site is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm during the main season and on-site parking is available with a charge for non-members. There are no facilities at the abbey itself, but snacks and toilets can be found at nearby Barnard Castle if you need them.
