Franciscan Gardens

The Franciscan Gardens are one of Canterbury's quietest hidden corners, tucked right in the city centre but feeling worlds away from it. Set on the site of England's first Franciscan settlement, established in 1224, the gardens carry over 800 years of history, from monastic life to the upheaval of Henry VIII's reformation and beyond. Walking through here feels less like sightseeing and more like gently stepping through time.

There's a peaceful, reflective quality to the space, with winding paths, pockets of greenery and views across the old monastic grounds. It's the kind of place you come to slow everything down, wandering between grass and gravel paths, finding a bench, and letting the city noise fade out completely. The Greyfriars Chapel and Eastbridge Hospital connection add another layer of story, linking the gardens to centuries of pilgrims and travellers passing through Canterbury. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am until 4:30pm, the gardens close for December and January. Entry is £4 for adults, with children under 17 free, and your ticket lasts all day.

Dogs are welcome to join you on lead, with water available on site, making it an easy, calm stop for a quieter wander together 🐾
