Give The Dog A Bone in York is the sort of shop that turns a quick browse into a proper rummage, packed with quirky gifts, unusual cards and all the bits you absolutely did not plan to buy but suddenly need. Dogs are welcome inside, so nobody needs to do the pavement-waiting shuffle while someone else tackles the aisles.

Based on Fossgate and open since 2003, it has built its name on fun, offbeat finds rather than standard souvenir-shop fare. The overall feel is cheerful, slightly chaotic in a good way, and ideal for picking up something more original than the usual tourist tat.

It's a useful wet-weather stop when you want to keep paws and people together, and the dog-coded name means most visiting dogs arrive with a sense of entitlement already in place.

Good to know:

Water bowls available

Free treats available

Doggy menu available

Dog Policy:

Dogs are welcome inside, so nobody needs to do the pavement-waiting shuffle. The shop is already very dog-coded by name, so the main job is simply to keep your own one from turning it into a full comedy sketch.
