That’s our way of flagging the places that go further — beyond “dogs allowed”, with a genuinely warm welcome for dogs inside.

Hardy’s Birthplace Visitor Centre is the gateway to Thorncombe Wood, a peaceful stretch of woodland and heath just outside Dorchester that inspired many of Thomas Hardy’s stories. The centre offers displays about Hardy’s life and the surrounding landscape, along with useful facilities including toilets and parking before you head out onto the trails. From here, paths wind through mixed woodland, past Rushy Pond and across restored heathland where wildlife thrives.

There is also the Under the Greenwood Tree Café, where dogs are welcome inside, making it a brilliant post-walk stop for coffee, cake, and a well-earned sit down after exploring the woods. Altogether it’s a lovely starting point for a slower countryside wander when the dog needs a proper leg stretch and the humans fancy big trees, birdsong, and a little literary Dorset along the way.

Dog Policy:

Dogs are welcome at the visitor centre and throughout the surrounding woodland trails, making this a very popular stop for dog walkers. In the main woodland areas dogs can enjoy plenty of space to exercise, though they should be kept under control and on a lead where signs request it, particularly in heathland areas during nesting season. Keep dogs out of Rushy Pond and follow local signage so wildlife, ponies, and visiting dogs can all share the space peacefully.
