That’s our way of flagging the places that go further — beyond “dogs allowed”, with a genuinely warm welcome for dogs inside.

Not every dog-friendly day out comes with a steam whistle and a proper sit-back-and-watch-the-world-go-by moment. Heatherslaw Light Railway is one of those rare finds where the journey is the plan — a gentle ride through Northumberland countryside with river views, wildlife spotting, and just enough novelty to keep both humans and dogs fully invested.
The train runs between Heatherslaw and Etal, giving you the perfect excuse to hop off, wander the village, visit the castle, or line up a pub or tearoom stop before heading back. It’s relaxed, a bit nostalgic, and ideal for those “we’re not rushing anywhere today” kind of outings.

Dog Policy:
Dogs are very welcome on board and travel free — no ticket required, just good train manners. They’ll need to stay on a short lead, mostly to stop any enthusiastic attempts to become the conductor or supervise the engine. 🐾🚂
