Not every dog-friendly day out comes with a steam whistle and a proper sit-back-and-watch-the-world-go-by moment. Heatherslaw Light Railway near Berwick upon Tweed is one of those rare finds where the journey is the plan — a gentle ride through Northumberland countryside with river views, wildlife spotting, and just enough novelty to keep both humans and dogs fully invested.
The train runs between Heatherslaw and Etal, giving you the perfect excuse to hop off, wander the village, visit the castle, or line up a pub or tearoom stop before heading back. Dogs travel free and are welcome on board, staying on a short lead for the journey.
It's relaxed, a bit nostalgic, and ideal for those "we're not rushing anywhere today" kind of outings — the sort of day where the dog gets scenery, you get a proper seat, and nobody has to navigate a car park twice.
Good to know:
Water bowls available
Free treats available
Doggy menu available
Dog Policy:
Dogs are very welcome on board and travel free — no ticket required, just good train manners. They'll need to stay on a short lead, mostly to stop any enthusiastic attempts to become the conductor or supervise the engine.
