Herstmonceux Castle near Hailsham is a proper castle-and-grounds day out where your dog can clock up serious sniff mileage while you soak up the history. Dogs are welcome in the gardens and grounds on a lead, though only assistance dogs can go inside the castle itself. The estate is open daily 10am to 5pm (last admission 4pm) from 1st April to 30th September 2026, with free on-site parking.
Expect lovely views, plenty of space to wander across 300 acres of formal gardens, woodland trails and wildflower meadows, and a dog water bowl waiting outside the café for good hydration manners. The Nuthatch Kitchen and Terrace serves coffee, cakes and light lunches daily 10am to 4pm, with terrace seating overlooking the castle. The grounds offer enough territory for a satisfying explore without the indoor-access shuffle.
It's the kind of place where leads stay on, paws stay busy, and everyone leaves with that pleasantly tired feeling that comes from a day spent somewhere properly interesting.
