Honister Slate Mine sits at the summit of Honister Pass, about eight miles from Keswick, and is England's last working slate mine. Mine tours and Via Ferrata experiences are strictly human-only, but dogs are welcome inside the Bait Cabin Café and the slate shop — so the group does not have to split entirely when someone wants a coffee or a browse.
The café serves hot food, homemade cakes, teas and coffees daily, and the shop stocks handcrafted Westmorland Green slate gifts. On-site parking is available with the first hour free, then £5 per vehicle for the day — bookable online or payable at the visitor centre. The mine is open seven days a week, 8:30am to 5:00pm, and there are plenty of fell-walking routes nearby for a sniff-break stroll before or after a café stop.
For dog owners visiting the Keswick area, Honister offers a genuinely useful combination: a memorable working-mine attraction, indoor café and shop access for dogs, and a dramatic mountain-pass setting that makes the drive there part of the day out.
