Houghton Mill and Waterclose Meadows near Cambridge is a proper "let them just be a dog" kind of day out. Set along the River Great Ouse, it's all open skies, riverside paths, and wide grassy meadows where the walk can stretch out as long (or as aimless) as you like. Dogs are very welcome across the grounds and meadows on lead, though they can't go inside the historic working watermill or tea room.

There's plenty of space to wander between water, fields, and quiet village edges, with routes that can turn into full loop walks if you're in the mood. The real draw here is the outdoor space — that easy National Trust rhythm of "we'll just keep going a bit further." There's also a tea room on site for a post-walk pause, though dogs will need to wait outside while you grab a cuppa.

One to keep in your back pocket when you want a slower, greener day out — big skies, easy walking, and plenty of room for a proper leg stretch and sniff-filled reset.

Dog Policy:

Dogs are welcome across the grounds and meadows on lead, but can't go inside the mill or tea room — so plan for the pavement shuffle if you're stopping for tea. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout.
