Lowther Castle & Gardens is a grand day out near Penrith, set across 130 acres of formal gardens, castle ruins and woodland. Dogs are welcome throughout the grounds on leads, and they can join you inside the café too — so nobody has to do the pavement-waiting shuffle while everyone else gets a coffee. There's on-site parking (£2 daily charge) and it's the kind of place that easily fills a dog-friendly day in the Lakes.

Well-behaved dogs can explore the gardens, castle grounds, outdoor paths and the indoor café, but they're not allowed on the Lost Castle adventure playground. The castle ruins and gardens are open every day from 10am to 4pm in winter and 10am to 5pm in summer, with last entry one hour before closing.

It's a strong choice when you want a big outdoor space that genuinely welcomes dogs without fuss. Lead-and-bag logistics are straightforward, and because it's a ticketed attraction with a café that lets dogs in, you can plan the whole day without the usual can-we-go-in guesswork.

Good to know:

Dog Policy:

Dogs are welcome on leads throughout the gardens, castle grounds and outdoor paths, and they're also allowed inside the café — just keep them out of the aisles. The one no-go zone is the Lost Castle adventure playground.
