Maiden Castle

Maiden Castle is one of the most dramatic historic sites near Dorchester, with enormous ramparts and wide open views that make an ordinary walk feel instantly more epic. English Heritage describes it as one of the largest and most complex Iron Age hillforts in Europe, with earthworks spread across the size of roughly 50 football pitches. Dogs are welcome on leads, though sheep graze the site, so countryside manners are essential.

The ramparts and ditches offer plenty of sniff-worthy terrain, and the sheer scale means there's room for a proper leg-stretch without feeling crowded. It's very much a place for scenic wandering with some history attached, and the views across the Dorset countryside are worth the climb.

Brilliant for stretching legs, soaking up ancient atmosphere, and letting the dog feel briefly in charge of an Iron Age fortress. Just keep leads handy and watch for grazing sheep—this is a working landscape as much as a historic one.
