Merchants 1688 has that atmospheric, tucked-away feel that makes an ordinary outing feel like a little occasion. It’s a great pick for a relaxed meal or a long, chatty drink in Lancaster, especially when you want somewhere that feels warm and a bit special without being stiff.

The menu leans into comforting plates and proper pub-restaurant energy, with drinks covering everything from classic pints to something a little more celebratory. Dogs are welcome inside in the first cellar bay only, so be sure to settle in the designated dog-friendly section.

It makes a lovely reward after exploring the area around Lancaster Castle or escaping a rainy-day wander, with dogs and humans able to head indoors together.
