Merkinch Local Nature Reserve is Inverness's only designated local nature reserve, a proper wildlife destination with paths, boardwalks, habitat interpretation and visitor events, all within easy reach of the town centre. The reserve welcomes dog walkers as part of normal use, with access to outdoor paths and visitor areas throughout the year.

Dog behaviour is managed on the reserve to protect wildlife and other visitors and older management documents highlight dog control and fouling concerns, so close control and bag-carrying are expected. Check on-site signage for any temporary restrictions around sensitive nesting or feeding areas, particularly during breeding seasons.

It's a genuine nature day out rather than a quick loop—habitats, hides and interpretation give you and the dog something to explore together. No dedicated visitor car park was confirmed from official sources, so plan your approach and parking accordingly before you set off.

Good to know:

Water bowls available

Free treats available

Dog Policy:

Dogs are welcome on the reserve's outdoor paths and visitor areas, with close control expected to protect wildlife and other visitors. Check on-site signage for any temporary restrictions around sensitive areas.
