Neptune's Staircase is a dramatic flight of eight canal locks in Banavie, four miles north of Fort William and one of Scotland's best-known engineering attractions. Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the outdoor visitor areas, making it an ideal stop for owners who want a short walk with a view and plenty of interest without needing to leave anyone in the car. The lock flight lifts boats 64 feet in a sequence that's endlessly watchable, especially when the chambers are in use.
It's also a popular spot for trainspotting, with the West Highland Line running alongside. Public access is available year-round at all times, so you can plan a visit around your own schedule and the dog's routine. There's no admission charge and no booking required.
The site is outdoors only, so plan accordingly for Scottish weather. Dogs must be kept on a lead and under control at all times, which is sensible near the water and the working lock mechanisms.
