Ogmore Castle

Ogmore Castle is a ruined Norman fortress set beside the River Ewenny near Porthcawl, managed by Cadw as a free-entry heritage attraction. The atmospheric stone walls and earthworks make it a compelling short-break stop for history lovers who refuse to leave the dog behind and the short-lead policy means you can explore the ground floor levels and open grounds together. The castle is open daily from 10:00 to 16:00, with last admission thirty minutes before closing.

There's an on-site car park, though it's liable to flooding after heavy rain, so wellies may earn their keep. Dogs must stay on short leads throughout and upper levels aren't accessible with them. Ground floor stonework, grassy banks and riverside ruins offer plenty of sniff-worthy corners without the guilt of splitting up.

The site has uneven surfaces and low walls, so keep an eye on tangled leads and adventurous noses near vegetation. It's free, dog-friendly and genuinely atmospheric—a proper castle ruin you can share with your lead-trained companion.
