That’s our way of flagging the places that go further — beyond “dogs allowed”, with a genuinely warm welcome for dogs inside.

Perched high above the village of Castleton, Peveril Castle feels less like a casual stop and more like a mini expedition with a seriously good payoff. The climb up is short but punchy, winding past benches (you’ll use them) before opening out into one of those “worth every step” moments at the top.
What’s waiting for you is the skeletal remains of one of England’s earliest Norman fortresses, built just after the Norman Conquest. It’s not about perfectly preserved rooms or polished exhibits here — it’s about atmosphere, exposure, and those wide, cinematic views stretching across Hope Valley and Cave Dale. Wind in your face, hills rolling out in every direction, and that quiet sense you’ve landed somewhere properly historic.
Back down at the visitor centre, there’s a small exhibition and shop, but the real magic sits above — stone walls clinging to the hillside, with sheer drops doing most of the defensive work. It’s the kind of place that turns a simple wander into a “we’ll remember this one” kind of day.
Perfect paired with a Castleton mooch, a cave visit, or a long Peak District walk where everyone ends up pleasantly tired and slightly windswept.
