Pickering Castle is a proper historic day-out stop, sitting above the market town with big countryside views and plenty of medieval atmosphere. Dogs are welcome on leads in the grounds, which makes it a solid choice for history lovers who travel with a four-legged sidekick.

The castle is known for its keep, chapel exhibition and the chance to mooch round castle grounds that still feel wonderfully rugged. Ancient walls, open-air ramparts and grassy baileys offer plenty of sniff-based inspections, and the views across the Vale of Pickering are worth the climb even if your dog is more interested in the earthworks.

It suits history-loving humans and dogs who enjoy pretending ancient fortifications were built specifically for important security patrols. Leads are required throughout, but there is space to explore and the atmosphere is relaxed enough for a gentle wander with paws and people together.

Dog Policy:

Dogs are welcome on leads in the grounds, so this one is great for history lovers who travel with a four-legged sidekick. Ancient walls, big views, and a dog who believes they are inspecting the castle for security reasons.
