That’s our way of flagging the places that go further — beyond “dogs allowed”, with a genuinely warm welcome for dogs inside.

RSPB Arne Nature Reserve is a wildlife-rich coastal reserve near Swanage, with designated dog-friendly trails where dogs on short leads are genuinely welcome. It works as a straightforward outdoor day out for dog owners looking for a proper walk in the Dorset heathland and estuary landscape, without the usual blanket no-dogs policy you find at many nature reserves.

Dogs are allowed on specific waymarked trails across the reserve, but not in the visitor centre, shop or café and the top section of Hyde's Heath Trail is also off-limits except for assistance dogs. It's one of the clearer examples of a working compromise between ground-nesting birds and the reality that plenty of dog owners want access to beautiful countryside.

There's visitor parking on site and the reserve pages are kept current with visit information. Check the RSPB website before you travel for any seasonal updates or trail changes, especially during nesting season when short-lead rules are there for a reason.

Dog Policy:
