Rydal Hall Retreat and Estate

Rydal Hall is a working estate with 60 acres of formal gardens, woodland and natural waterfalls near Grasmere, set up for visitors to wander freely. Entry to the gardens is available with donations appreciated and there's a proper day-out feel with paths and open grounds to explore. It's the kind of place where you can lose an afternoon and let the dog burn off energy on leads, surrounded by Lakeland scenery.

Dogs are welcome on all the estate grounds and gardens, though they must stay on a lead throughout because of wild stock grazing on the premises. The woodland and visitor routes give you plenty to see without needing to book ahead – just turn up, park and explore. Parking is available at the hall reception for visitors, or there's a public car park at Pelter Bridge nearby.

Close to Grasmere and Ambleside, this is a practical half-day or full-day destination when you want a proper walk without committing to a long hike. The open-access grounds make it easy to slip in whenever a wet-paw break sounds good.
