Scrivener's Books & Bookbinding in Buxton is less of a shop and more of an expedition — five floors of winding rooms, hidden corners and towering shelves packed with around 40,000 books. Dogs are welcome inside, so nobody needs to do the pavement-waiting shuffle while you browse. It's the kind of place where you pop in for a quick look and resurface an hour later wondering where the time went.

The building itself is part of the experience, with narrow staircases, unexpected nooks and that unmistakable old-book atmosphere that makes everything feel a little bit magical. You'll find everything from well-thumbed classics to rare and unusual finds, plus bookbinding and restoration happening alongside it all.

It's not polished or modern — and that's exactly the point. This is a proper second-hand bookshop, full of character, curiosity and quiet moments of discovery, with paws welcome on every floor.
