Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve

Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve is a large, well-known forest reserve near Nottingham, famous for the ancient Major Oak and centuries of legend. Dogs are welcome throughout the year, from dawn to dusk, with clear access to the trails, visitor centre and café—keeping everyone together while you explore one of England's most storied woodlands. Your dog can join you in the café and is asked to stay on a lead around the visitor centre area.

On the trails, close control is expected, with seasonal lead requirements in some areas to protect ground-nesting birds and grazing livestock. Between 1 March and 31 August, dogs must be on a lead in the fenced heath areas at Budby South Forest.

Self-guided trails fan out from the visitor centre and the main car park is accessed from Swinecote Road. It's a satisfying outing for sniff-led exploration and the whole visit can include your dog from car park to café without having to choose between forest and refreshment.
