St Mary's Lighthouse and Visitor Centre sits on a tidal island off the Whitley Bay coast, reached by a causeway that opens and closes with the tide. The distinctive white tower and island setting make it a well-known North East landmark, and the causeway crossing adds a proper sense of occasion to a day out with your dog. Dogs are welcome on the island and causeway on lead, giving you access to the coastal paths, nature reserve and open spaces around the lighthouse.

The lighthouse tower itself and indoor visitor buildings don't permit dogs, so this is one for fresh-air exploration rather than indoor browsing. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout. There's on-site parking at the causeway car park, which takes one small logistical worry off the list. Opening days vary through the week and depend on tidal conditions—the island typically aims for seven-day opening between May and September, with weekend and school holiday opening in winter—so it's worth checking current visitor hours and tide times before you set off.

Tide times dictate safe crossing windows and the whole visit revolves around the coastal rhythm. The nature reserve is home to seals, rock pools and clifftop grassland, and the island offers striking views along the North East coast. It's a short walk that feels like a mini adventure.
