That’s our way of flagging the places that go further — beyond “dogs allowed”, with a genuinely warm welcome for dogs inside.

The Bell & Crown is one of those proper, no-nonsense Canterbury pubs that feels like it's been doing its thing forever… because it kind of has. Sitting right by the Cathedral on Palace Street, it's a classic wood-panelled local with a strong sense of character, and dogs are welcome inside, so nobody needs to do the pavement shuffle while someone claims the corner table.
Inside, it leans traditional in all the best ways: local ales on rotation, a well-loved jukebox, and a steady mix of locals, students and visitors that gives it that lived-in, slightly chaotic pub charm. Food tends to be simple, classic pub fare rather than the main event, making it more of a drink-first, settle-in kind of place. The seating outside is a bit of a hidden win too, with views towards the Cathedral that make an afternoon pint stretch very easily into the evening.
It's not trying to be polished or trendy, just a solid, welcoming spot for a pint (or two) with that unmistakable "this is a proper pub" energy. Dogs can join you while you claim a corner, listen to the jukebox, and fully commit to staying longer than planned.
Good to know:

Treats available
Doggy Menu available
Dog Policy:
Dogs are welcome inside all areas of the pub, so they can snooze nearby while you settle in with a pint. Keep them on a lead and calm around food.
