The Black Horse has the feel of a straightforward, traditional York pub with a strong local-drinking backbone rather than polished city-centre theatrics. Tucked along Monkgate, it is known for real ales and a more old-school pub atmosphere, the sort of place that suits people after a solid pint and familiar surroundings instead of a concept-led bar experience. It comes across as simple, rooted and refreshingly unfussy, which in York can be half the charm.

Good to know:

Dog Policy:

Dogs are welcome inside. This is old-school pub territory, so bring a relaxed dog and leave the dramatic barking monologues at home.
