That’s our way of flagging the places that go further — beyond “dogs allowed”, with a genuinely warm welcome for dogs inside.

The Milbourne Arms is a proper local pub just outside the centre of Carlisle where good food, great pints and a notably dog-friendly welcome all come together. Dogs are welcome inside, and the pub has recently been shortlisted as one of just six UK pubs in the Great British Pub Awards “Best Dog Friendly Pub” category.

It keeps the feel of a traditional local, with heritage character, hearty plates and a strong reputation for Sunday lunches, but the dog setup goes well beyond a bowl by the door. Expect dog mats, water bowls, free treats, emergency poo bags and wipes, plus a vet-approved dog menu with extras including The Lakes doggie ice cream, dog beer and dog rosé wine.

There is also a free dog exchange boutique where owners can donate or take dog jackets, jumpers and waterproofs that no longer fit. For a bigger outing, the Sunday dinner and walk offer links The Milbourne Arms with sister pub The Crown, letting owners stroll between the two for a complimentary drink and a treat for the dog.
