The Old Dog is a welcoming country pub in the village of Thorpe near Ashbourne, perfectly placed for walkers exploring Dovedale, Thorpe Cloud and the southern Peak District. Family-run and independent, the pub focuses on relaxed hospitality, seasonal food and a strong connection to local suppliers and producers. The menu changes regularly but centres on fresh, locally sourced ingredients alongside well-executed pub classics and popular Sunday roasts.

Inside, the atmosphere blends rustic character with a modern, comfortable feel, with open fires and cosy corners that make it an ideal stop after a countryside walk. There’s also an outdoor courtyard for warmer days, while the bar serves local ales, wines and craft drinks. Dogs are genuinely part of the pub’s everyday rhythm, with muddy paws and post-walk flops by the fire considered completely normal after a day exploring the nearby trails.

It’s the kind of Peak District pub where the plan is usually “just a quick drink” after a walk… and somehow turns into a long, very comfortable lunch.

Good to know:

Water bowls available

Treats available

Doggy Menu available

Dog Policy:

Dogs are welcome inside, which makes this a cracking stop after a Dovedale wander or a Thorpe Cloud leg-stretcher. Expect muddy paws, tired flizzles and a dog who settles by the fire like they’ve absolutely earned this.
