Titchfield Abbey

Titchfield Abbey is a striking English Heritage ruin tucked near Fareham, midway between Winchester and the Solent coast. The remains of a thirteenth-century abbey tower over an open-air site where dogs on leads are welcome to explore alongside their owners. The abbey closed to monastic life in the 1530s and was later converted into a Tudor mansion, leaving layers of history written into the stonework.

Access is straightforward: a small on-site car park is reached via a narrow-gate track, with a £2 charge for non-members or free entry for those with a valid English Heritage car sticker. The site is open daily, 10am to 5pm April to September and 10am to 4pm October to March, though the abbey may occasionally close for ticketed events. Dogs are welcome on leads across the outdoor ruin.

Surfaces are uneven in places and climbing is not permitted, so it suits dogs happy to potter rather than scramble. It makes a useful short stop or rainy-day backup between longer walks along the coast or in the South Downs.
