Westgate Gardens is one of Canterbury's most-loved green spaces, sitting right by the River Stour at the edge of the city centre. Dogs are welcome, making it one of the best easy-access walks in Canterbury. It's the kind of place where the city softens instantly, swapping busy streets for riverside paths, open lawns and shaded walks under mature trees.

The gardens stretch out along the water, with plenty of space for picnics, slow wanders or just sitting and watching the river drift by. You'll find winding paths, flowerbeds and some standout features like the huge 200-year-old plane tree and views towards the historic Westgate Towers. There's a real mix of energy here too—one minute it's peaceful and tucked away, the next you're near the heart of the city with cafés, shops and boat trips just a few steps away. It's also part of a larger chain of riverside parks, so you can easily follow the path out into the countryside if you want to stretch things further.

Historically, the gardens became a public park in the 1930s after being gifted to the city, and they've been a shared space for locals and visitors ever since. It's a proper "pause button" moment by the river, with paws and people both welcome.

Dog Policy:

Dogs are welcome, so bring the lead for riverside paths where water and cyclists keep things lively. Keep paws close, pick up after them, and enjoy one of Canterbury's easiest green escapes.
