A Rainy Afternoon near Cromer with Dogs: Coffee, a Browse and a Pub Stop
There comes a point on a wet seaside holiday when everyone has looked out of the window enough. The dog has sighed. Someone has checked the forecast again, presumably hoping a different weather app might have better manners.

Time to go out anyway.
A visit to Holt Garden Centre, followed by a meal at The Village Inn in West Runton, makes an easy little outing from Cromer. There’s shopping to investigate, coffee to linger over and a family-owned pub on the way back. Your dog can join you inside at both.
No need to fill a whole day. A few enjoyable hours will do very nicely.
The sort of browse that ends with an unexpected purchase
Despite its name, Holt Garden Centre is in nearby Kelling. It’s now part of the Blue Diamond group, so expect a garden centre with several departments to explore, rather than a small independent plant nursery.
Alongside plants and gardening essentials, there are homewares, gifts, clothing, pet supplies and a food hall. That gives the non-gardeners in the group something to investigate too. You can admire things for a garden you haven’t got, consider whether you need another pot and somehow find yourself discussing a purchase that wasn’t remotely on the agenda when you left Cromer.
The outdoor plants can wait for a break in the weather. On a soggy afternoon, the indoor browsing and café are the main attraction.
The food hall is particularly tempting if your idea of a holiday souvenir is something edible. Its shelves include preserves, teas, coffees, sweets and snacks, with Norfolk producers among the selection. A jar of something good to take home feels like a perfectly sensible reward for leaving the house.
Coffee with a view of the weather, rather than a face full of it

The Garden Terrace Café looks over the garden area towards the countryside. It gives you somewhere to sit and enjoy the setting while the rain gets on with watering it.
The café describes itself as a calm, sociable hub, and its kitchen and in-house bakery prepare meals, cakes and desserts. For this outing, coffee and something sweet leave a useful amount of appetite for the pub later. Although nobody is policing your cake-to-dinner ratio.
Dogs are welcome too, so you can settle down together after your browse.
It is worth expecting company. Visitor reviews mention a busy café and occasional waits, so this isn’t somewhere to promise yourself an entirely hushed retreat. If your dog prefers fewer people and passing feet, a visit outside the main lunch rush is a sensible choice. Take your time with the shopping and let the afternoon find its own pace.
Then swap the shopping for a proper pub
On the return towards Cromer, take the coastal route through Sheringham and stop at The Village Inn in West Runton.
This is an independently owned family pub. Lee and Harriet Merritt bought it in 2023 with their two daughters, bringing their experience of working in local pubs and hotels to a place of their own.
That family connection is part of its appeal. It’s an old village pub with a sociable coastal setting, welcoming people dropping in for a drink as well as those settling down to eat. After an afternoon browsing, it offers a comfortable change of scene and a reason to stay out a little longer.
You don’t need to earn your table with a bracing beach walk first. Arriving with a shopping bag and a dog who has spent the afternoon supervising is quite enough.
Food worth leaving room for
The Village Inn’s menu centres on home-cooked pub favourites: fish and chips, homemade pies and Sunday roasts, alongside seafood dishes and vegetarian and vegan choices.
It’s the sort of food that suits a wet Norfolk afternoon. Something substantial, perhaps a pudding, and the pleasure of having nowhere urgent to be. Local ales add to the pub character, while your dog can settle beside you instead of waiting for the meal to be over.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome throughout the pub, making the indoor welcome straightforward.
