Portland Castle is one of Henry VIII’s coastal artillery forts, built to defend Portland harbour. Its squat rounded seaward form was designed to deflect an incoming cannon shot.
You can trace the fort’s long and varied story through presentations, interactive exhibits and an audio tour.
Be sure to visit the Tudor kitchen, armoury and gun decks. The Governor’s Garden is a perfectly sheltered spot to enjoy dramatic sea and harbour views, and you can enjoy refreshments in the Captain’s House Tearoom.
Dogs are welcome in the grounds of Portland Castle, including the castle, the beach, the shop and the lower section of the tea room. Please note that dogs must be kept on a short lead at all times.
