Weymouth combines a broad Georgian seafront, harbour walks and access to the South West Coast Path around the Isle of Portland and surrounding Dorset coast. Dogs are allowed on the main Weymouth and Greenhill beaches from October to April, while year-round options include Bowleaze Cove, the section beyond Greenhill Groyne towards Overcombe and the designated area beside Weymouth Pavilion. Walk the Esplanade for sea views and lunch at Little Dishes Tapas Bar, then continue to Sandbar for coffee along the seafront. Drive or take the bus to Portland Castle at Castletown for Tudor history, sea views and waterside grounds where dogs on short leads are welcome throughout the castle, beach, shop and lower tea room. Return to Weymouth Esplanade for lunch at Jurassic Rocks Cafe, then finish with ice cream at Wafflicious, where dog-friendly treats are on the menu too.

Dogs are allowed on parts of Weymouth’s coastline throughout the year, but there are seasonal restrictions on the main central beach.

Dogs are banned from the main sandy section of Weymouth Beach between 1 May and 30 September each year. (dorsetcouncil.gov.uk)

However, there are still dog-friendly beach areas nearby during summer, including sections towards Bowleaze Cove and areas beyond the restricted central sands. Many dog owners also head to nearby beaches along the Jurassic Coast where dogs are welcome year-round.

Outside the summer restriction period, Weymouth becomes much easier for long beach walks directly along the main sands and promenade.

Pavilion Car Park is another useful central option and works well for quicker access to the seafront and harbour area. (dorsetcouncil.gov.uk)

During summer holidays and sunny weekends, Weymouth becomes extremely busy by late morning, so arriving earlier makes parking and beach access much easier.

Once parked, Weymouth is best explored slowly on foot. The dog will naturally begin full-scale harbour patrol duties immediately upon arrival.
