Alney Island Local Nature Reserve is a wide open wetland landscape tucked beside the River Severn and less than a kilometre from Gloucester city centre. It covers around 80 hectares of flood meadow and riverside habitat managed for both nature conservation and easy-going public recreation, with broad grassy paths and big skies.

Because it sits between branches of the Severn it feels pleasantly "away" even though the city is close, and it's a popular spot for a calm leg-stretch with plenty of space to wander. Expect grazing used as part of the reserve's management, so lead awareness around livestock is useful. The reserve is also linked with the Severn Bore, so on the right day you might catch that extra bit of local drama on the river.

It's the sort of place that suits a simple morning or afternoon out with a dog who enjoys open ground, river air and the occasional hopeful sniff toward grazing animals.
