Ambleside Roman Fort is a compact heritage site in the heart of Ambleside, managed by English Heritage and free to explore during daylight hours. The remains of the fort—known historically as Galava—sit close to the shore of Lake Windermere and offer a short, atmospheric stop for history-curious dog owners visiting the Lakes.

Dogs on leads are welcome to join you throughout the outdoor fort remains, though farm livestock may be grazing nearby so lead manners matter. The site is open any reasonable time during daylight, with no booking needed, making it an easy add-on to a town wander or lakeside walk.

There's no on-site parking, but public charged car parks are available throughout Ambleside. It's a brief visit rather than an all-day destination, but the readable stonework and interpretive history make it a worthwhile detour if your day includes Ambleside—and your dog gets to tick off a Roman fort.
