That’s our way of flagging the places that go further — beyond “dogs allowed”, with a genuinely warm welcome for dogs inside.

A gentle, slower-paced stop where the dog sets the tone and everything else follows. The Firs is small, calm, and quietly beautiful — gardens to wander, countryside stretching out beyond, and just enough to explore without it ever feeling busy or overwhelming.
It’s less about ticking things off and more about drifting. A loop through the gardens, a wander into the surrounding fields, maybe one of the longer circular walks if the dog’s feeling ambitious. This is “we’ll just pop in” energy that very easily turns into a proper leg-stretch.
And the real win? You’re not stuck outside. Dogs are welcome inside the visitor centre and café, so you can actually sit down together and make a proper stop of it — rare for a place this peaceful.
Good to know:
Water bowls available
Treats available
Doggy Menu available
Dog Policy:
Dogs are welcome on short leads in the gardens, visitor centre and café, making this a rare indoor-friendly National Trust stop. Only assistance dogs are allowed inside the cottage itself, but there are plenty of walks starting directly from the site.
